BACK to vitamins                 VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body. It is necessary to form collagen, an important protein used to make skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is essential for the healing of wounds, and for the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.

This powerful product contains 1000mg of Vitamin C in a time-release formula, along with a mixture of Bioflavonoids rose hips, orange, lemon, grapefruit, acerola cherry, hesperidins and rutin. This product is vegetarian and free of corn, soy, egg, gluten, milk, rice, sodium, wheat, yeast, added sugars, starches, synthetic dyes, artificial flavorings and preservatives.

Because it is an antioxidant, vitamin C has been researched for its role in reducing the risk of several serious illnesses.  Vitamin C may protect LDL cholesterol from being oxidized by free radicals.

Oxidation of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol may be responsible for the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels, which leads to atherosclerosis, heart attack, and even stroke.

Flavonoids are compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages that have diverse beneficial biochemical and antioxidant effects and much more. Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds that are ubiquitous in nature and are categorized, according to chemical structure, into flavonols, flavones, flavanones, isoflavones, catechins, anthocyanidins and chalcones. Over 4,000 flavonoids have been identified, many of which occur in fruits, vegetables and beverages (tea, coffee, beer, wine and fruit drinks). The flavonoids have aroused considerable interest recently because of their potential beneficial effects on human health. Studies have shown them to have antiviral, anti-allergic, anti-platelet, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and antioxidant activities.

Antioxidants protect cells from free radicals, harmful particles present naturally in the body, which damage cell walls.  Oxidative damage is associated with aging, dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease, degenerative conditions in the joints and bones, and the buildup of plaque in the cardiovascular system.  Antioxidants ensure that important nutrients and chemicals are not being destroyed by highly reactive oxygen particle.

Stress can damage the metabolism, decreasing nutrient uptake.  Supplementing with important vitamins such as vitamin C may ensure that the body receives all the nutrients it needs to combat stress.  Furthermore, it has been found that obese individuals have lower vitamin C levels than non-obese individuals, leading researchers to find that vitamin C plays a role in improving the metabolism and increasing the efficient use of energy by the body.

As one of the most important nutrients in the body, vitamin C is essential to overall good health.  The University of Maryland Medical Center cites vitamin C as a possible treatment for the common cold, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even heart disease.  Vitamin C is an essential nutrient to the body, and as such supplementation may increase the diverse benefits of this important nutrient.
